Have you ever noticed short-term vision loss in one eye after looking at your phone in the dark at night and then putting it away? This situation may feel worrying at first. However, in some people, this complaint may be caused not by permanent vision loss, but by a temporary condition related to the eyes adapting to different light conditions.
This condition has been described in the medical literature as “transient smartphone blindness”, meaning temporary smartphone blindness. It may usually occur after using a phone in a dark environment, while lying on one side in bed, with one eye exposed to more light than the other.

What Does Smartphone Blindness Mean?
Smartphone blindness refers to a short-term decrease in vision or the feeling that one eye is not seeing after looking at a phone screen in a dark environment.
This condition usually develops due to using a phone with one eye. For example, while lying on one side, one eye may be covered by the pillow or remain in the dark. The other eye, however, is exposed to the bright light of the phone screen. As a result, the two eyes adapt to different light conditions.
When the phone is put away, the eye that was looking at the screen may have difficulty adapting to the dark for a short time. This may temporarily create the feeling of “one of my eyes is not seeing.”
What Causes Smartphone Blindness?
The main reason for this condition is that the eyes adapt differently to light and darkness. The eye that remains closed or covered by the pillow in a dark environment adapts to darkness. The eye looking at the screen adapts to bright light.
When the phone is put away and both eyes are opened, the light sensitivity of the two eyes may temporarily differ. For this reason, one eye may be perceived as seeing less than the other in the dark.
In reported cases in the literature, this condition has been described especially after looking at a smartphone screen with one eye while lying in the dark. Therefore, smartphone blindness is considered a temporary difference in light adaptation rather than permanent blindness.
Is This Condition Permanent?
The condition described as smartphone blindness is usually short-lived, and vision often returns to normal within a short time. However, the important point is this: not every decrease in vision in one eye is smartphone blindness.
Vision loss in one eye may also be associated with retinal diseases, vascular problems, optic nerve diseases, or some neurological conditions. Therefore, before attributing vision loss to phone use, the duration of the symptoms, the pattern of recurrence, and accompanying findings should be taken into consideration.
When Is an Eye Examination Necessary?
If the difference in vision that occurs after using a phone at night improves within a short time and appears only in relation to this situation, it may be associated with temporary light adaptation. However, an eye examination should not be delayed in the following situations:
- If the decrease in vision lasts longer than 1–2 minutes
- If the complaint also recurs during the daytime
- If sudden vision loss occurs in one eye
- If flashes of light, floating black spots, or a curtain-like shadow accompany it
- If headache, speech disturbance, numbness, or weakness is present
- If the vision loss gradually increases
If any of these symptoms are present, the condition should not be attributed only to phone use, and an ophthalmologist should be consulted without delay.
What Should Be Considered When Using a Smartphone?
Using a phone in the dark may negatively affect eye comfort. Especially if the screen brightness is high, if the phone is viewed closely for a long time, or if one eye remains closed, eye fatigue, blurred vision, and dryness may increase.
For this reason, instead of using the phone in complete darkness, it is more appropriate to have a soft light in the room. The phone screen should be viewed with both eyes open whenever possible. Screen brightness should be reduced according to the ambient light, looking at the screen continuously for a long time should be avoided, and breaks should be taken to rest the eyes.
If blurred vision, headache, burning, stinging, dryness, or difficulty focusing is frequently experienced after long screen use, having an eye examination may be helpful.
The temporary condition known as smartphone blindness may often be a short-term difference in light adaptation. However, if vision loss in one eye lasts for a long time, recurs, or occurs together with other symptoms, an eye examination should not be neglected.
